A community thread calling for year-round reprints lands the same week an OP05 Luffy and its PRB01 reprint both doubled. The scarcity math is visible on the tape.
Scarcity is now a weekly event, not an annual one
A thread on r/ONEPIECETCG this week argued that PRB3 alone will not fix availability, and that recently released sets need reprinting on a rolling basis rather than in occasional product drops. That is a supply complaint, and supply complaints show up in prices before they show up in print schedules. This week they showed up loudly.
> 140.8% · seven-day gain on the OP05 Luffy above
The cards it touches
The cleanest illustration is the card above: Monkey.D.Luffy (119) at $23.29, up 140.8% over seven days. The chart does not show a slow grind; it shows a step.
The interesting part is the control group. Monkey.D.Luffy (OP05-119) (Reprint), the PRB01 version of the same card, sits at $20.33 and is up 107.2%. A reprint existing did not cap the original, and it did not insulate the reprint from the same demand wave either. When a card is wanted, both printings move; the reprint simply moves slightly less.
That is the strongest argument the reprint camp has, and also the strongest argument against the idea that reprints flatten value. The spread between the two prints is narrow, and both are climbing together.
The tape this week
The rest of the top of the board is promo-driven rather than supply-driven, which is a useful contrast. Charlotte Flampe (SP) is up 45.8% to $49.14, and the DON!! Card (Alternate Art) (Luffy and Loki) (Gold) is up 59.4% to $36.01. Neither is a candidate for a reprint in the sense the thread meant.
The downside is almost entirely event promos, where supply is fixed by definition and demand is the only variable. Usopp (3-on-3 Cup) [Participant] fell 36.3% to $140.20, and Trafalgar Law (Offline Regional 2023) [Finalist] fell 34.2% to $38.92. Scarcity sets a floor on nothing.
Sealed is doing its own thing
If reprint cadence were the only variable, sealed economics would be uniformly stretched. They are not. OP11 leads box EV at a 0.76 ratio on a $566.03 box market, OP15 follows at 0.75 against $256.11, and OP13 trails at 0.61 on a $439.06 box. Full ratios sit on the EV page.
That spread of 0.61 to 0.76 says the pressure is uneven across recent sets rather than systemic. A set can be hard to find at retail and still return well under its box price in singles.
The read
The thread's premise and the tape agree on one narrow point: a reprint does not reliably suppress the original. The OP05 Luffy pair moved in the same direction, in the same week, at a similar scale.
What the data does not support is the idea that reprint scarcity is the dominant price driver right now. The biggest weekly moves on both sides of the board are event promos that will never be reprinted, and sealed EV ratios vary enough across OP11, OP13, OP14 and OP15 to suggest set-specific demand rather than a uniform supply squeeze. Watch the gap between the two Luffy prints on the chart; it is the cleanest reprint signal the market currently offers.
