A community thread about reviving OP05 to OP08 leaders with EB05 and OP18 support runs into a sealed market where one set costs 9.7x MSRP and the other 2.3x.
A thread on r/ONEPIECETCG this week asked a question plenty of newer players are asking: with EB05 and OP18 reveals trickling out, is it worth building an older leader that is about to get fresh support? The deckbuilding answer is somebody else's column. The sealed answer is blunt, and the two sets most often named, OP05 and OP08, sit in completely different price universes.

OP05, the 9.7x box
Against a $107.76 MSRP, OP05 sealed product now trades at 9.7 times its original sticker, which works out to a 123% annualized return from release price across 34 months. The one-year figure is hotter still at 194%. The three-month line is where the chart gets honest: down 39% annualized, so the recent tape has been cooling, not climbing.
OP08 is the other half of the conversation and the cheaper entry by a wide margin. Its box sits at $246.75, 2.3x MSRP, with a 132% one-year figure and, unlike OP05, a positive three-month read of 27%.
Inside the box
OP05 rips to an expected value of $145 against that four-figure box price, an EV ratio of 0.14. Every sealed box is negative EV by design, so a ratio under 1 is normal; 0.14 is what happens when a box gets priced as a collectible rather than as a bag of singles. At $43.76 per pack, you are buying lottery tickets at steakhouse prices. OP08 is friendlier at 0.35.
The card above has an all-time high of $6,100 and has not moved on either the seven-day or thirty-day window. The Law manga alt is the one with a pulse: up 4.6% over thirty days and sitting exactly at its own all-time high of $1,700.58.
The graded side
OP05 has 48,307 cards in the PSA population with an 89% gem rate, and graded copies carry a 2.4x premium over raw. That implies roughly 298,080 boxes already opened, which is a lot of supply destroyed and a reasonable explanation for the sealed multiple. OP08 is at 35,515 graded, 87% gem rate, and a thinner 1.7x premium from about 274,800 boxes opened. See the destruction tracker for the full ledger.
On the chase card, 1,351 PSA submissions and an 87% gem rate have not stopped a PSA 10 from printing a 2.7x multiple over raw at $15,350. The gold-stamped Luffy runs a 3x multiple. The Law manga alt, by contrast, grades to just 1.3x, which is what a high gem rate does to a premium when the raw price is already aggressive.
Long-term read
Our Long-Term Score has OP05 at 8 out of 10, labelled Strong hold: 34 months of history, a deep top-five with two cards above $4,900, and heavy graded absorption. OP08 scores 3 out of 10, Unproven, driven by a shorter 25-month record, a flatter card ladder topping out near $504, and a weaker graded premium.
So the community instinct and the market data are not in conflict so much as mismatched in scale. Fresh support can lift singles demand for an older leader, but OP05's sealed price stopped tracking playability a long time ago.
