What surfaced

A thread on r/ONEPIECETCG this week put the OP17 Big Mom Leader under the microscope. The poster, self-identified as a player who started around OP16, argued that the Leader's stacked negative restriction is oppressive to play against and reads as the opening move in a broader power creep problem for the game.

We are not going to litigate the rules text here. What matters for this desk is that Leader-level complaints are one of the more reliable leading indicators for set demand, because Leaders drive which staples get bought and which alternate arts get chased. And OP17 is already the most distorted set on our board.

OP17 is the outlier on box economics

OP17 currently carries the widest gap between sealed cost and estimated pull value of any set we track. A box marks at $386.40 against an EV of $1,120, a ratio of 2.9. Nothing else on the EV leaderboard is above 1.

Set Box market Box EV EV ratio
OP17 $386.40 $1,120 2.9
OP15 $255.45 $216 0.85
OP14 $257.99 $194 0.75
PRB02 $394.67 $276 0.7
OP11 $650.06 $442 0.68

The standard caveat applies twice over on a young set: EV that far above box price usually means singles have not finished price discovery, not that free money is sitting on a shelf. Thin sales data on chase cards inflates the top end of the distribution.

Where OP17 singles sit

The headline card is Shanks (020) (Alternate Art) at $299.99, which is doing most of the work inside that EV figure. Below it, the super rares are still cheap: Shanks (022) and Kaido (062) both sit at $29.99.

That spread is the point. When a set's value is concentrated in one alternate art Leader and the SR tier is flat at thirty dollars, sentiment about which Leaders are actually strong has room to reprice things quickly in either direction.

The OP16 contrast

The poster's reference point, OP16, looks nothing like OP17 on sealed math: $207.21 a box against $139 of EV, a ratio of 0.67. But OP16 singles are the ones moving right now. Edward.Newgate (Alternate Art) is up 62.2% over seven days to $37.50, and Portgas.D.Ace (001) (Alternate Art) is up 30.5% to $55.56. Both flagged in our whale monitor, Newgate at an 87.1% intraday-scale move.

Elsewhere, the Round 1 promo cohort is unwinding hard. Monkey.D.Luffy (Round 1 Promo) is down 52% to $207.09 and Sanji (Round 1 Promo) is down 65.9% to $35.88, which is what supply arriving into a promo market normally looks like.

The Terminal take

Power creep arguments tend to arrive before the price data confirms them, and this one is no exception: the OP17 Leader in question does not yet have a tracked print in our matched set. What we can see is a set where a single $299.99 alternate art anchors a $1,120 EV against a $386.40 box, while the SR tier has not moved off $29.99. That is a set still finding its floor, and the loudest cards in the discourse are usually the first to move when it does.
