The question doing the rounds
A thread surfaced on r/ONEPIECETCG this week asking a simple thing with no simple answer: what is the ceiling a buyer should accept for an OP17 booster box at prerelease, and should shoppers expect local stores to mark up hard on launch weekend. No official pricing was announced. This is a community temperature check, not a Bandai statement, and the replies are the usual mix of MSRP purists and people who have already made peace with paying up.
The useful part is that the market has a number, and it is not a small one.
What the data says
As of 2026-08-12, OP17 carries a box market price of $378.76 against a modeled expected value of $1,146, an EV ratio of 3.03. That is the top of our box EV leaderboard by a distance that is frankly uncomfortable.
| Set | Box market | Box EV | Ratio |
|---|---|---|---|
| OP17 | $378.76 | $1,146 | 3.03 |
| OP15 | $258.90 | $213 | 0.82 |
| OP14 | $258.46 | $195 | 0.75 |
| PRB02 | $395.23 | $273 | 0.69 |
| OP11 | $650.06 | $441 | 0.68 |
Read the second column down and you get the honest picture of sealed One Piece product: mature sets settle between 0.68 and 0.82 EV ratio, which is to say a box reliably returns less than it costs. OP17 sitting at 3.03 is not evidence that OP17 is a money printer. It is evidence that presale singles are priced on preorder listings, thin volume, and hype, while the box price has not caught up or been rationalized yet.
The singles doing the lifting
The EV number is top heavy. Shanks (020) (Alternate Art), the OP17 leader alt art, sits at $299.99. The secret rare Loki is at $79.99, and the base super rare Shanks (022) prints $29.99.
That distribution is the whole risk. A $1,146 EV built on a $299.99 chase card means the median box does not look anything like the average box, and presale prices on chase cards have a well documented habit of deflating once supply actually lands. Anyone justifying a prerelease markup with the 3.03 ratio is quoting a number that will almost certainly be revised.
Context from the rest of the board
The week's mover list shows how fast sentiment moves on this market. Portgas.D.Ace (118) is up 105.2% to $20.79 and Edward.Newgate (Alternate Art) is up 97.8% to $44.70, both OP16.
The other side is louder. The Round 1 promos took a bath: Tony Tony.Chopper (Round 1 Promo) is down 48.4% to $63.38 and Sanji (Round 1 Promo) is down 44.0% to $38.21. Supply arriving into a hyped price is the single most reliable way to lose a third of your position in seven days.
The Terminal take
The 3.03 EV ratio on OP17 is the least trustworthy number on our leaderboard right now, precisely because it is the highest. Every settled set in the top five sits below 0.82, and OP17 will migrate toward that band as singles find real liquidity rather than presale asks. If you are pricing a prerelease box against $1,146 of theoretical value, understand that the theory rests on one $299.99 card and a set nobody has opened at scale.
