What happened

Bandai Card Games published a second New Leader Battle segment for OP-17 on August 21, continuing its pre-release drip of leader showcases for the set. These clips are the publisher's standard demand-building routine ahead of a booster launch: a leader gets screen time, players start theorycrafting, and the singles market prices in the answer before anyone has drawn a card in a sanctioned event.

The interesting part for this desk is not the reveal itself. It is that OP-17 already carries the most distorted box economics on our board.

OP17 box math

OP17 sealed sits at a market price of $363.79 with a calculated expected value of $988, an EV ratio of 2.72. That is not a rounding error against the rest of the field. The next set on our EV leaderboard is OP15 at 0.80, followed by OP14 at 0.72, OP11 at 0.68 and PRB02 at 0.67.

Set Box market Box EV Ratio
OP17 $363.79 $988 2.72
OP15 $257.02 $205 0.80
OP14 $262.96 $188 0.72
OP11 $641.78 $438 0.68
PRB02 $392.97 $262 0.67

Read that table carefully. Every mature set on the list prices sealed above its pull value, which is normal: you pay a premium for the lottery ticket and the sealed-product collector bid. OP17 does the opposite, and it does so because the top of the rarity ladder is priced on thin, early, pre-release data rather than settled supply.

The cards doing the lifting

Three OP17-linked singles carry most of that EV. Charlotte Linlin (112) (Manga) is marked at $3,750. Monkey.D.Luffy (ST31-004) (SP) sits at $3,250. The Monkey.D.Luffy (079) (Super Leader Alternate Art) is at $2,500.

That Luffy super leader alt art is the card most directly exposed to a New Leader Battle news cycle, because leader showcases are what convert competitive interest into leader-slot demand. Whether $2,500 survives contact with full print-run supply is the open question. Pre-release chase prices are the least liquid numbers in this game.

Elsewhere on the tape

The rest of the week has nothing to do with OP17 and everything to do with promo churn. Jinbe leads gainers at $26.41, up 88.4% over seven days, flagged at seaking severity in our whale feed. Sabo (004) (Alternate Art) is close behind at $45.81, up 87.4%.

The losing side is an anniversary-set unwind. Portgas.D.Ace (119) (English Version 3rd Anniversary Set) is down 40.2% to $74.76 and Sabo (120) (English Version 3rd Anniversary Set) is off 32.6% to $87.95. Tony Tony.Chopper (Gift Collection 2023) shed 28% to $194.29.

The Terminal take

A 2.72 EV ratio is a statement about information, not value: OP17's chase singles are priced off pre-release scarcity while sealed is priced off a $363.79 street rate that assumes normal supply. One of those two numbers is going to move. Historically, the singles side does the adjusting once boxes are actually open, and every other set on the leaderboard already sits below 1.00.
