What happened

Bandai Card Games published an OP-17 New Leader Battle 1 video on August 19, spotlighting the incoming leaders from the set. It is promotional material, not a rules bulletin, but leader reveals are the single most reliable driver of pre-release positioning in this game. Leaders define deck shells, and deck shells define which alt arts get bid up.

The timing matters because OP17's premium leader tier is already priced like a finished product rather than a speculative one.

The OP17 leader board

Three alternate-art leaders from the set are tracked on our board, and they are almost indistinguishable on price.

Card Number Rarity Price
Shanks (020) (Alternate Art) OP17-020 L $299.99
Edward.Newgate (001) (Alternate Art) OP17-001 L $299.98
Charlotte Linlin (099) (Alternate Art) OP17-099 L $299.69

A 30 cent spread across three separate leaders is not a coincidence of demand. It is the signature of a thin, listing-anchored market where sellers price off each other rather than off sales velocity. That is normal for a set in its promotional window, and it means the first genuine deviation from the $300 shelf is the informative one, in either direction.

The box math is the outlier

OP17 currently shows a box market price of $320.17 against a modeled expected value of $979, an EV ratio of 3.06. That is a number you almost never see on a mature set, and it deserves the obvious caveat: EV models are only as good as the singles prices feeding them, and those singles prices are the same $300 leader quotes described above.

For context, here is what the top of the EV board looks like among established sets:

Set Box market EV Ratio
OP15 $262.18 $208 0.79
OP14 $264.15 $190 0.72
OP11 $644.78 $437 0.68
PRB02 $393.01 $263 0.67
EB03 $324.42 $206 0.63

Every one of those sits below 1.0, which is the settled state for sealed product: the box costs more than the cards inside it, because that is how Bandai and distributors capture margin. OP17 at 3.06 is a pre-supply artifact. Expect compression as print volume arrives and the leader tier finds real transaction prices.

Around the tape

Elsewhere this week, the movers were legacy-heavy. Sabo (004) (Alternate Art) leads gainers at $38.06, up 99.4 percent over seven days, with Jinbe at $26.41, up 88.4 percent. On the other side, Tony Tony.Chopper (Gift Collection 2023) fell 26.2 percent to $206.62 and Monkey.D.Luffy (001) dropped 29.5 percent to $47.31. The heaviest dollar move belonged to Marshall.D.Teach (Manga), up 27.2 percent to $2,000.99.

The Terminal take

Three OP17 leaders priced within 30 cents of each other is a quote, not a market. The 3.06 EV ratio inherits that fragility directly, since box EV is computed from the same unsettled singles. The signal to watch is not the level but the dispersion: when those three leaders stop moving in lockstep, real demand has shown up, and OP17's EV ratio will start converging toward the sub-1.0 band every other tracked set occupies.
