Netdecking Bandai: a beginner's deck list series and the price of entry

A community Deck Check series testing Bandai's own published lists lands in a week when box EV tops out at 0.74 and the singles tape is violently split.

Official lists are free. The cards in them are not.

A newer player posted on r/ONEPIECETCG that they have started a recurring series building and playing Bandai's own published deck lists, on the logic that a beginner should test the manufacturer's homework before inventing their own. It is a reasonable premise and a useful one for this desk, because official lists are the single cleanest on-ramp into the secondary market: they tell a new buyer exactly which singles to go shopping for. The question our data answers is what that shopping trip costs right now, and whether sealed is a cheaper route than the singles board.

> $190 · estimated pull value inside an OP15 booster box

The cards it touches

No named card from the thread maps to a listing on our board, so the relevant data is structural rather than specific. On the sealed side, OP15 leads the expected value table at a 0.74 ratio, with a box marked at $255.73 against that $190 of estimated contents. OP11 sits a hair behind at 0.73, though it does so from a $588.43 box, which is a very different cheque to write for the same ratio.

Below that, OP14 prints 0.68 on a $267.31 box, PRB02 0.65 on $378.50, and OP13 0.62 on $439.03. Nothing on the full EV board is above 1.0, which is the normal state of the world: ripping is entertainment, buying the list is procurement. For a player working through published decks, that gap is the entire argument for singles.

The tape this week

The singles side is anything but calm. Smoker (001) (Parallel) is the week's hardest move, up 135.8% to $37.91, and our whale monitor flags it at seaking severity. Shanks (020) (Alternate Art) follows at $46.08 on a 73.2% gain, with Emporio.Ivankov up 56.2% to $48.11.

The other direction is just as steep. Dracule Mihawk - OP14-020 (Alternate Art) is down 53.7% to $28.13, and Monkey.D.Luffy (041) (Alternate Art) has shed 36% to $27.23.

Card Price 7d
Smoker (001) (Parallel) $37.91 +135.8%
Shanks (020) (Alternate Art) $46.08 +73.2%
Emporio.Ivankov $48.11 +56.2%
Dracule Mihawk (Alternate Art) $28.13 -53.7%
Monkey.D.Luffy (041) (Alternate Art) $27.23 -36%

The read

A beginner following manufacturer lists is, functionally, a demand signal with a shopping list attached, and those lists overwhelmingly call for base rarities rather than the alternate arts swinging 50% in a week. The chart above shows what happens at the top of the rarity stack: thin float, loud prints, no obligation to stay put. Those two markets barely touch each other.

Which is the quiet point worth making. The cost of learning the game from Bandai's own decks is largely insulated from the tape that gets written about, while the cards doing the moving are the ones nobody needs to play a published list. Both things can be true in the same week, and this week they are.
