What surfaced
A deckbuilding thread on r/ONEPIECETCG asked a simple question with expensive implications: how does a non-red player put together a Don Krieg list in the current OP17 environment? The poster flagged East Blue support cards printed with Shanks in mind and wondered whether that shell transfers.
That is a gameplay question, not a product announcement. But it is the kind of question that moves singles, because the answer usually ends with someone opening a tab on a red leader.
Where OP17 sits
The headline numbers in OP17 are remarkably tight. Three alternate-art leaders from the set are effectively priced as one asset class.
| Card | Number | Price |
|---|---|---|
| Shanks (020) (Alternate Art) | OP17-020 | $299.99 |
| Edward.Newgate (001) (Alternate Art) | OP17-001 | $299.98 |
| Charlotte Linlin (099) (Alternate Art) | OP17-099 | $299.69 |
A spread of thirty cents across three different leaders in three different color identities is not a coincidence. That is a chase-slot price, set by rarity and print position rather than by any particular archetype's win rate. Whether Krieg becomes a real red contender or not, the Shanks alt art is priced against the ceiling of the set, not against the metagame.
The box math
OP17 is the outlier on our sealed board. Box market sits at $320.17 against a modeled EV of $979, an EV ratio of 3.06. For contrast, the current EV leaders among established sets top out at OP15 at 0.79, with OP14 at 0.72 and OP11 at 0.68 on a $644.78 box.
Read that gap with care. Ratios above 1 on a freshly tracked set usually reflect thin secondary-market data on the top hits rather than free money, and the three $300 leaders above are exactly the cards doing the heavy lifting in that EV number. Sealed EV compresses as supply lands and hit prices settle.
Elsewhere on the tape
The seven-day movers this week are not red-leader stories, but they show where liquidity went. Sabo (004) (Alternate Art) from OP13 leads at $38.06, up 99.4 percent. Jinbe out of OP05ANN is up 88.4 percent to $26.41 and registers as a seaking-severity move on our whale board. Sanji (Round 1 Promo) added 32.6 percent to $50.66.
The downside was concentrated in older Straw Hat staples and promos. Monkey.D.Luffy (001) from ST01 fell 29.5 percent to $47.31, and Tony Tony.Chopper (Gift Collection 2023) dropped 26.2 percent to $206.62. Gum-Gum Lightning (Premium Card Collection -Best Selection Vol. 4-) led the losers at negative 31.1 percent, now $24.34.
At the top of the market, Marshall.D.Teach (Manga) moved 27.2 percent to $2,000.99, a reminder that the high end is still trading with conviction while the ST01 tier bleeds.
The Terminal take
A brewer asking how to make Krieg work does not reprice a $299.99 alt art. What the thread does illustrate is the structural problem with entering a color late: the OP17 marquee leaders are clustered at roughly $300 regardless of archetype demand, so the entry cost for red is set by collectors, not by deckbuilders. Watch the OP17 EV ratio of 3.06 rather than the singles; if that number converges toward the 0.63 to 0.79 band the rest of the board occupies, the leaders came down to meet it.
